Clement of Alexandria and Athanasius:

‘If to provide a proof means a kind of knowledge that requires a principle more profound than He whome we wish to demonstrate, then there is no proof for God.’ Athanasius said: ‘The Deity does not submit to logical demonstrations, but to the faith and the piety of reason.’
